Team MightyFIT Spotlight: Devon Kerr
By: Christine Bean
Meet Devon Kerr, a goalkeeper for the Washington Spirit, a professional women’s soccer team in Washington, DC that participates in the National Women’s Soccer League. Learn about her journey to becoming a professional soccer player and how the convenience of MightyMeals has been a gamechanger with her busy schedule.
How did you get your start playing professional soccer?
Devon: I’m from Canada, born and raised, and I started playing soccer at age 5. I played for the U-17 Canadian Women’s National Team in the 2013 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship and 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as the starting goalkeeper. I played in a lot of showcase teams in the U.S., and was recruited heavily by several colleges. I ultimately chose Ohio State University and played there for four years as the starting goalkeeper. They were really great at getting my soccer career going. I was named “Goalkeeper of the Year” my senior year which was a huge honor. Because of my career at Ohio State, I got a lot of notice from professional teams, including a few teams in the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League). During my rookie year, in 2019, I played for the Houston Dash. It was an amazing club and experience. I then attempted to go on-loan with a D1 team in France, FC Metz, in the beginning of 2020. Playing there was very exciting but there were lots of safety issues and different standards within the organization as a whole compared to the U.S., and I quickly knew I would not become a better goalkeeper overseas. As soon as I left France, Washington Spirit reached out to me immediately wanting to sign me, and now I’ve been here for the past two seasons! My job is so fun that it truly doesn’t feel like a job. I’m a very competitive person, so being able to compete with my teammates and get better with them each day makes work pretty enjoyable.
What’s your best nutrition advice?
Devon: Nutrition is super important to me; I’m big on vitamins and supplements. You want to make sure you’re researching and getting every piece of nutrition you need to properly fuel your body. There’s a huge misconception in the athletic world, that you need to limit the amount you eat because you want to look a certain way. I don’t believe that’s true. Focus on what you are putting into your body rather than how much. You don’t need to always focus on the calories. You need to be eating good calories and healthy ingredients in order to properly fuel your body.
How did you get introduced to MightyMeals?
Devon: I had been on a search for a high-quality, healthy, delicious meal prep company for a while. As an athlete, I am on the road a lot and have long training days, so it’s very important for me to fuel myself properly with the best ingredients. It’s tough to make healthy meals for myself every day, especially when I’m on the road and I can’t really grocery shop or meal prep. I saw the MightyMeals sponsored logo around at Audi Field, home to the DC United Soccer Club, and I thought, “Wow, this could be a gamechanger for me!” Honestly, it has been. MightyMeals is a godsend, and I am so glad I spotted the logo on the field that day.
What do you love about MightyMeals?
Devon: I love the message of MightyMeals; inspiring people to live healthier lifestyles. Convenience is a major factor in nutrition. People have work, kids, dogs, and not enough time. MightyMeals helps alleviate that problem and provides that convenience. Having delicious, chef-prepared meals ready to pop into the microwave is the most convenient thing ever, and it has truly made my life so much easier.
What’s your favorite MightyMeal dish?
Devon: Oh gosh, I love them all! I think my favorite might be the Turkey Taco Bowl, it’s so good. For breakfast, I have been loving the Carnitas Breakfast Bowl. I also order bulk items, like sweet potatoes and green beans, to make my own mini meals.
